This is meant to be a step-by-step guide to mechanics for surviving on ShadowGate MUD for new players.
It does not cover player interactions as this would be an entire guide unto itself.
There's a lot of information below, broken into 13 parts.
I suggest completing each part prior to moving on to the next, but nothing is stopping you from reading through the whole thing at once.
This guide is not comprehensive, but it will help bridge the knowledge gap between experienced players and newbies, minimize
frustration for true newbies, and give new players a leg up to getting started learning how to play the game (and possibly teach some old dogs a few new tricks).
It by no means tells you how to create the most optimized character, but it will give you a good start with a survivable class and a
base of knowledge to build on, including where to find equipment experienced players would consider indispensable.
It covers everything I did playing an elven wood elf fighter up to level 11 or so, which is the one of the simplest classes to
learn & play. The elven race has the best vision, so you won't need to bother about lanterns and oil, and the wood elf sub-race
grants bonuses to strength and dex, perfect for keeping fighters alive and killing things.
Fighters can use the widest range of weapons and armor, so you won't need to worry about finding light armor; you can wear it all.
You will have the most feats of any class to play around and experiment with, perfect for newbies.
By the time you get to the low teens, you'll do enough damage, and have enough equipment, experience and hit points to
allow you to explore the under 20 areas west of Shadow and around Tabor.
If you get stuck, you can always ask for help on the lines (help line use), especially the ooc line.
Essential to a good experience is a decent mud client so you can see all the pretty colors, but bear in mind scripts and triggers are not allowed.
I use Zmud, but there are plenty of good clients out there.

Part 1: Getting started
Go through character generation and create a wood elf Fighter
Pick Recommended for your stats
pick normal age range
create the rest of your character, go through the in-game tutorial, follow the commands. Once you get to the Offestry town square, this guide takes over.
Initial Setup:
Here are the aliases and nicknames I've set up, feel free to copy them and use them for yourself or set up your own aliases.
<alias 0 score>, now when you type 0, you will see your character sheet
<alias ga get all $*> - ga will pick up everything on the ground, 'ga from corpse' or 'ga from chest' will let you pick up items from corpses or chests or wherever else you need
<alias gc get coins $*> - gc will allow you to get coins from the ground, 'gc from corpse' or 'gc from chest' will let you get coins from corpses or chests or wherever else you need
<nickname att attacker> - will let you type att when targeting attackers, useful for the impale feat, which needs to target an enemy
<alias wa watch> - allows you to watch your back for thief stabs by typing two letters instead of five
<alias kl kill $*> - now you don't have to type out the whole word “kill” to attack something
<alias 1 sweepingblow> - you will use sweepingblow a lot in combat, better to just type a single character
<alias 2 impale att $*> - you will use impale a lot in combat, better to just type a single character. Note the nickname used, which was added above.
Other useful commands:
<discern> will let you know how much base damage a weapon does and how much protection a piece of armor grants.
briefcombat (this will let you see more descriptive combat messages, which is more fun and will let you know if you do something like start fighting without wielding a weapon)

Macro: If you can set up macros with your MUD client, set up F1 as quaff kit
Skill suggestions:
you'll have enough gold to simply buy healing vials instead of spending time healing \\
You won't see the +/- 1 until you've successfully studied it (or used the identify spell if your a mage)\\
Part 2, Starting out:
s;w from offestry center to get to the general store
<list> to see the items, show <item 1>, <show item 2> etc. to make sure you're buying the right one.
buy a a large sack, climbing tools, large pouch, rope.
<put rope in sack>, <put tools in pouch>, <wear pouch>
<feats add sweepingblow> - this uses your free level 1 feat to add the sweepingblow attack option, which attempts to hit everything you're fighting, best against large groups
<feats martial impale> - this uses your free martial feat to add the impale attack option, which attempts to damage and paralyze (for a round) one enemy you target
3e from town center and n, to the armory
<buy banded> or <buy banded 2>, whichever is medium size (show banded, show banded 2, to make sure you get a medium size)
<buy great helm> or <buy helm 2>, whichever is medium size (show helm, show helm 2, to make sure you get a medium sized helm)
you should already be wearing a robe from the character generation tutorial
3w from town center and n, to the weapon shop
<buy two handed sword>, <wield two handed>
Part 3, Let's Play!!:
go out the western gates of offestry, head northwest to the keep. You can get quests from the two npc's on the way, but they're not essential
explore the keep, kill the xvarts, spiders, and the half-ogre, using sweepingblow and impale to do extra damage
Keep killing things, burying corpses, collecting shortswords and pants, and selling what you don't need in town
the timer resets, so if you keep trying to run, you will trap yourself in a fight you want to escape!\\
When you have enough experience to go up a level (0 to check your score), return to the board in offestry and <advance>
there is a cemetary with undead at night, kill them, or explore around for other things to kill.\\
Once you find the skeleton key in the keep, the command is <unlock door with key>
In the forest south of Offestry, there is an elf you can help by finding journal pages in the forest (by searching) and giving them to her.
Most quest giving NPCs will respond if you say hello or hi to them.
In return for completing the quest for her, she will give you a colorful armband, which grants a +1 bonus to AC.
Feat Build through level 15:
At level 3, light weapon feat
At level 4, increase strength (stats gain strength, you will want to max your strength at 24)
At level 6, strength of arm feat (feats martial strength of arm)
At level 6, toughness feat
At level 8, increase strength again (stats gain strength)
At level 9, improved toughness feat
At level 11, exotic weapon proficiency feat
At level 12, damage resistance feat
At level 12, increase strength again (stats gain strength)
At level 15, improved damage resistance
Your stats max at 25, but the base highest modifier is at 24.
Hunger/Thirst:
Monitor your hunger/thirst from time to time to make sure you don't starve. You can buy food at the tavern
Part 4, Advancing to Level 6
To get to level 6 (and every 5 levels thereafter) you need to find your trainer.
After you advance to level 6, you need to find the cart to get to the rest of the game. From Offestry town center, head east towards rolling hills, then go south as much as you can (follow the wide gravel trail)

The cart drops you on a path, and you need to get to Tabor with all your gold.
When the cart drops you off, go: ne;s;ne;e;ne;e;ne;e;se;s (crossroads on the quiet forest road)
Then go: w;w;sw;s;s;s;se;e;se;s;s;s;e;ne;e;se;se;s;s;se;e;e;e;se;se;se;se;se;s;se;se
Then go: e;e;e;s;s;s to Caerveron Square in Tabor.
Part 5, Getting set up in Tabor:
The bank is n;n;e from the square.
From the town square, head to the crown and castle inn, s;se;se;e (open door)

<l board> to see what you can do with the board, other players make posts here. <read> to see what they say, post <title> to make a post of your own, and <reply Post #> to answer someone's post
Make sure you are not hungry/thirsty (score), if you are, buy some food and drink some water (read menu, buy <item>, buy rose water, eat food, drink drink)
Head back to the square.
From the square, go n;e to the scribe's office
<draw tabor> and <draw area>.
Part 6, * Dying and recovery *
When you die, you'll go through a death sequence. If you're out of offestry, most of your equipment will remain on your corpse.
You will have a choice of temples or cities to reappear in, you should choose tabor since you have a bank account there, and you don't know where the other temples and cities are yet.
You will need to pray to come back to life. Dying costs you 10% of your accumulated xp, but that's okay, recovering isn't bad.
<reequip> at the church to get some basic equipment
You are now faced with a choice, you can try to recover your corpse and risk another 10% xp loss if you die again, or you can re-equip from where you are.
If you choose to go back for your corpse, head to the bank to withdraw gold, and use the gold to buy weapons and armor from the shops, and stock up on healing kits (5 batches of 15 should do, <bp 15>), depending on how much gold you have.
Be liberal with drinking kits on your way back to your corpse, and remember you can only drink 5 per round, so heal up before each fight.
Part 7, Goblin Stronghold
From this point forward, it makes more sense to be liberal with drinking your healing kits to have a better chance of avoiding death than trying to time it perfectly and save a few gold in healing vials.
My advice is if you are running low on kits (less than 15), head back to town and buy some more from the healer <bp #>. You don't want to get caught with zero healing kits.
Once you're familiar with Tabor, go to the goblin stronghold
if you're quick, you can block down before the goblin archers and rangers in the towers do, which will let your wimpy work if you get in trouble
The goblin king may be difficult to kill at first, don't forget to set wimpy and wimpydir, or level up a few times and try him later
After clearing out the stronghold (it's not very large), return to tabor and visit the weapon shop to sell your loot.
You can sell scrolls at the general store.
**Deposit your excess gold in the bank.
When you have enough gold, buy field plate armor from an armor shop in Tabor or Shadow, for an additional +2 AC, and sell your banded armor.
<study> items to see what they are, and whether they have magical properties, whether they're cursed
Part 8, Shadow
The easiest way to get to Shadow is via the the Tabor-Shadow River ferry
Part 9, Level 6-8 Echoes Mountains
When you run out of goblins to kill, head to echoes mountains, west from Shadow's west gate and north from the large wooden sign
Don't forget to peer ahead, you should be able to see inside the first level of echoes mountains, including a pair of trolls
After the trolls head down to the 2nd level (you passed the entrance on the way to the trolls)
From here you can go west to kill some lizards, once again you can search this room for a random drop
head back the way you came, and then north, then east when you can (if you hit the dwarven mine or the sloping cavern, you went the wrong way).
Just before you hit the tunnel between caverns, you'll see the entrance down to level 3 of echoes mountains.
The main ogre pit just after the entrance to level 3 of echoes mountains. There are mats you can search to get random drops
Some ogres have +1 weapons, they will be of exceptional quality if you look at them. Don't forget to check for curses before you wield anything.
Half-ogres use spells, but sometimes have bracers of defense
After you get your second attack per round, head northeast from the main ogre pit
Echoes Mts Level 4:
Part 10, Level 8-9 Kildare glen
Part 11, Level 9 - Yntala forest
Yntala is really meant for characters leveled to the teens, but we can take it at level 9 with the right equipment, and if we're careful
Part 12, miscellaneous

That just about does it. If you've gone all the way through this guide, you're at least level 10 and should be able to keep fighting in Yntala all the way to level 19 and picking up the damage resistance feats as you go. I encourage you to get out and explore the other areas on tabor's area map, because that's where the fun is, but this guide should give you a basic understanding of the game and how to re-equip after losing your equipment, and how to recover from xp loss (self-inflicted or otherwise).
Beat in mind this guide says nothing about role-playing, so the best bet is to start with the help roleplaying file on SG. There will be a companion guide to this one for player relations for newbies soon.
