The Ahngek are sentient insects residing mostly in the former Tsvarnen Empire. Similar in shape to an ant or ankheg, they have six appendages, walking on the back four and using the two larger and more dextrous appendages to wield and operate tools. This allows them extremely fast movement over short distances and the ability to navigate in cramped spaces incredibly well. Their carapace is a hard chitin that ranges in colours from blue, green, and red, all with a glossy luminescence that makes them shine in the light. While sporting powerful mandibles and razor sharp claws they are omnivores and opportunistic feeders, and quite a few hives maintain underground plantations of molds and fungi.
Ahngek are born into hives, with a single powerful psionic leader they refer to as royalty. This leader maintains complete loyalty of their brood through a psionic connection to each, but can only control several hundred. If the hive grows beyond this scope, a new royal Ahngek is born and splits the hive to expand Ahngek territory. Each brood acts independently, and the personality and desires of the royalty in charge directs the brood's actions. Because the brood must remain relatively close to the royal Ahngek in control, they do not forage broadly and typically responded to outsiders with decisive violence. Stories of the Ahngek have mostly laid in the realm of myth and rumor, as travelers who venture near a hive do not often survive, and it is only recently that the broods have made themselves known to their neighbors on the surface.
Recently, every thousand or so hatchings an Ahngek is born that is not royalty or bound to the brood hive mind. Referred to as the Unbound, these free Ahngek are either abandoned by the brood as broken, or used as special envoys and agents due to their ability to travel long distances and still be able to operate. These Unbound have created a new age of thought for many of the hives: where before they used to fiercely defend their territory, many are exploring concepts of diplomacy, cooperation, and the exchange of knowledge with other races. At the same time, these Unbound are in a tenuous position, gauging the benefits of the brood versus exploring their individuality, a choice not offered their kind before.
Either due to their psionic nature, or by some blessing or curse, the Ahngek cannot wield the weave. Even the simplest of spells tend to flow off of them as if they had some natural protection of it.
